Vodafone Wins Wireless Airwaves License in Qatar

A consortium of companies led by UK-based Vodafone Group, has won a second wireless airwaves license in the Middle Eastern nation of Qatar, according to that country’s telecom regulator.

Vodafone’s consortium was among five candidates bidding to end the last telecom monopoly in the Arab world. Other bidders included Verizon Communications Inc., AT&T Inc., Emirates Telecommunications Corp., and Kuwait’s Mobile Telecommunications Co.

Vodafone will now be licensed to compete with Qatar Telecommunications Co. (Qtel), which runs the only wireless and fixed-line telephone networks in oil-rich Qatar.
