Telstra Telecom Hopes to Reduce Australian Carbon Emissions by 5 Percent
Australian’s top telecom provider, Telstra Corp., recently comissioned a Climate Risk report, and the conclusion is that telecommunications technology could reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 5% over the next eight years.
“Our analysis found that by harnessing smarter networks and devices it is possible to deliver reduced emissions while also reducing expenditure on energy for the end user,” said report author, Dr. Karl Mallon, noting that the telecommunications sector alone could reduce Australia’s carbon emissions by 27 million tonnes (or 4.9%) by 2015, delivering annual cost savings of up to $6.6 billion.
Dr. Mallon’s report outlined several new telecom-based technologies that could reduce emissions, including remote management of home appliances over broadband or wireless networks, and presence-detecting technologies that turn off electronic devices that are not being used. Remote collaboration technologies, meanwhile, could help cut down on emissions generated by workers commuting between multiple offices, and high-definition videoconferencing should reduce the need for air travel.
"What’s exciting about today’s report (is) it provides tangible ways to conserve energy, conserve resources and reduce expenditures,” the Telstra CEO concluded.
