Qwest Mulls Home Security to Offset Losses of Land Lines
Qwest is exploring the idea of offering home-security services, such as Web-based video, that would allow subscribers to monitor their homes over the Internet. A security service would give customers more reasons to keep their home connections, said Qwest chief executive Ed Mueller.
"We're trying to figure out how to mitigate the loss of the wire-line phones," he said. "Until that decline stops, people should be skeptical. We're skeptical. I'm just not willing to give up there."
Qwest is spending about $300 million this year to boost the speeds of its home Internet connections, extending fiber-optic lines farther into neighborhood hubs, called nodes. The faster speed will encourage customers to download high-definition video signals, Mueller said.
"This is a valuable commodity at a pretty reasonable price," Mueller said.
