Orange UK Reports Surge in Mobile Data Usage through Digital Media Index

Orange U.K. has released its second Digital Media Index, which looks at consumer usage of mobile data services. The first Digital Media Index, released in May 2007, reported that in the 250,000 games were being downloaded each month, driven by the “Atari generation”; that Orange customers sent over 870 million text messages in the first quarter and that Orange World, the company’s mobile internet portal, was attracting over 2 million hits per month. The second Digital Media Index, released on 10 December 2007, showed further progress. The operator noted a 37% surge in picture messaging: in August 2007 over one million photos were uploaded from mobile phones to online photo albums. Text messages were up 25% to one billion per month. Music downloads were up 15% to 295,000 and game downloads were up a more modest 3.4% to 691,032. Orange also noted that revenues from mobile TV were double the level forecasted.

Significance: These are positive trends, although some of these segments, such as mobile TV, are growing from a very low base. Orange did not comment on what was driving these trends, although the provisioning of faster access through 3G and HSDPA deployment as well as continuous enhancements to user interfaces are helping to foster consumer usage of services other than voice and SMS. Orange U.K. reported annual rolling ARPU from data services of 83 euro, or about 21.6% of ARPU in the third quarter of 2007. This is up from 19.8% from the third quarter of 2006. A recent report by Ofcom, the U.K. telecoms regulator, noted that in the third quarter of 2007 81% of U.K. mobile users used SMS, 33% photo messaging, 16% internet access, and 10% email.
