Mobily to Spend US$1 Billion on Wireless Broadband in Saudi Arabia
Khaled Al Kaf, the chief executive officer of Etisalat’s mobile unit in Saudi Arabia, Mobily, has said that the operator will spend more than US$1 billion on wireless broadband in the next threefour years. This will be one of the key milestones”.
Significance: Mobily signed a memorandum of understanding in September 2007 to acquire Bayanat Al Oula for network services for 1.5 billion Saudi riyals (US$400 million) in a bid to build up its capacity in providing domestic data and online services. WiMAX is a muchneeded technology that will provide voice and data services to many of the countrys remote regions. Fixedline penetration in the country is among the lowest in the Middle East at 15.7%, and internet penetration stands at 14.2%.
