Google Joins Sprint and Clearwire in WiMAX Consortium
Sprint Nextel announced that it is reviving its WiMAX joint venture with Clearwire Corp., with the help of $3.2 billion in financial backing from internet search giant, Google, and other tech-industry heavyweights.
In addition to its investment in the venture, Google will integrate many of its online services with Sprint’s forthcoming WiMAX networks. The Mountain View, California-based search engine will become Sprint’s default mobile search provider, and Google Maps Mobile and YouTube accessibility will be offered on all new Sprint handsets.
Sprint, Clearwire, and their partners have committed to investing a combined $12 billion in the revived WiMAX consortium.
