FCC Grants Final Approval to AT&T Dobson Communications Acquisition


The U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved AT&T’s $2.8 billion acquisition of rural wireless carrier, Dobson Communications, this week, with certain conditions.

FCC commissioners voted to approve the transfer of the vast majority of Dobson’s wireless spectrum licenses over to AT&T, but ordered the companies to divest licenses in a handful of areas where competition could suffer.

In general, the FCC concluded that the deal was in the public interest, as it would likely bring new wireless technologies and services to cell phone users in rural areas.

FCC approval was the final hurdle for the Dobson acquisition, which received the Justice Department’s endorsement late last month.

“It’s certainly a historic day for those in the Dobson family of companies,” commented the rural carrier’s founder and Chairman, Everett Dobson. “I’m relieved that the period has passed and thrilled the company is going to AT&T. They have done a tremendous job in the transition effort, and I’m sure they will do a great job for our employees and customers, as well.”
