EU to Sue Belgium, Poland and Portugal over Telecoms Rules
The European Union (EU) Commission is to take Belgium, Poland and Portugal to Europe's highest court for violating European telecoms rules. Dow Jones reports that Portugal is in the dock for refusing to give up its golden shares in Portugal Telecom, while Poland is accused of not granting full independence to the Polish telecoms regulator and Belgium stands accused of putting an unfair burden on some telecoms operators by the way it calculates social tariffs.
Significance: The legal action is usually the EU's last option in such matters. The Commission has been calling for Portugal to drop its Portugal Telecom golden shares, but the government has vowed to retain them.
