Deutsche Telekom Sees Fixed-Line Decline in 2008

Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) expects its fixed-line revenues to keep falling next year despite a strengthening broadband Internet access business that goes some way to compensate for dwindling landline voice calls.

"We won't be able completely to stop the fixed-line sales decline next year but we are trying to achieve as soft a landing as possible," Chief Executive Rene Obermann told German markets daily Boersen-Zeitung in an interview released on Friday.

Obermann said he expected to beat his 2007 target of winning at least 40 percent of new DSL broadband customers in Germany, where Deutsche Telekom faces stiff competition from rivals including United Internet (UTDI.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) and Freenet (FNTG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research).

And he said Deutsche Telekom's new no-frills brand, Congstar, which it launched in July, had about 50,000 contract customers by the start of December and was winning at least a thousand new customers daily for a prepaid mobile service.

The expected consolidation of Germany's telecommunications market should lead to a slowing of recent steep price falls within 12-18 months, Obermann added in the interview due to be published on Saturday.

Obermann said Deutsche Telekom's strategy for its business outside Germany was focused on regions where it has its own networks. The most important of these are the United States and eastern Europe.

He said the company would concentrate on expanding its mobile Internet offerings and would look at acquisitions in markets where it is already present as well as in neighbouring countries and in emerging markets.

Acquisition targets would have to meet strict criteria, however, Obermann said, with a cost of capital around 8 percent.

Obermann declined to say whether he planned an initial public offering for all or part of Deutsche Telekom's thriving mobile business in the United States, but said there were no concerns about transparency that necessitated such a move.
