Carrollton Company to Launch Wristwatch Phone
Turtle Wireless, known for its "B-Dazzle" line of cellphone and iPod accessories, has announced plans to launch a tri-band GSM phone designed to look like and be worn as a wristwatch.
The TWP-800 will feature a touch screen, WAP/GPRS compatibility, MP3/MP4 capability and 128MB of internal memory. The package includes a stereo Bluetooth headset, data transfer cable and charger. The phone will not have upgradable media storage.
It will retail for $199.95 in the Latin-American market starting Jan. 13.
"We have to go ahead and get the specs ready for the North American market," Shiraz Odhwani, a spokesman for Carrollton-based Turtle Wireless, said in a telephone interview. "Pending the FCC's approval, we're looking at (a U.S. launch in) the second quarter."
Odhwani said the phone will get expandable media functionality via a MicroSD card reader in its second generation, though he did not stipulate when that may be. He further stated that the device will not be capable of wireless Internet, but the possibility remains for future generations of the phone.
"This thing is the talk of the town," Odhwani said. "People see it and just freak out."
