Verizon to Challenge Comcast in Washington D.C. Cable TV Market
The District of Columbia Office of Cable Television has reached an “agreement in principle” that will likely allow Verizon Communications to launch its FiOS TV service in Washington D.C.
The deal, which took nine months to negotiate, still requires the approval of Washington’s mayor and council, and must undergo legal scrutiny from the Office of the Attorney General. Assuming this goes smoothly, FiOS TV service could be available in parts of the city by early next year, posing new competition to cable incumbent, Comcast.
The deployment of FiOS TV will mean more choices for consumers and potentially lower prices, according to Ward 3 Councilwoman, Mary Cheh.
Comcast spokeswoman, Jaye P. Linnen, attempted to play down the significance of Verizon’s impending entrance in an email, stating that “competition is not new to Comcast.”
“The phone company is simply trying to catch up to where we have been for years,” she wrote.
