Iraq Communications Ministry to Discuss Sector Issues at October Conference
The Iraqi Ministry of Communication is working with CWC Associates to hold a Telecoms Conference in London on the 13-14 October 2008. The event will focus on Iraq's progress to liberalisation, investment opportunities in broadband network roll-out, progress on fibre-optic connectivity, and WLL opportunity for connectivity and service delivery. The conference will feature the Ministry of Communication's vision for the development of telecommunications services in the country and management-level speakers from mobile and fixed wireless operators including Zain and Kalimat.
Significance: Due to the political climate, Iraq's telecommunications infrastructure has suffered in the past; recently, much progress has been made—especially within the mobile and fixed-wireless sector. Within the mobile market, Zain is now the largest operator in the country; the acquisition of Iraqna's infrastructure has increased Zain's national market share to 70%. The remaining market share of 30% is allocated to Asiacell. Although the third operator, Korek, has a licence it is does not yet have the infrastructure in place to deploy national services and only operates in a small northern Kurdish regions. Mobile penetration at the end of 2007 was 33% which is considered very low compared to other Middle Eastern nations—such as the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Israel—all of which have exceeded mobile penetration levels of 100% for over a year. Iraqi mobile penetration has rapidly increased between 2004 and 2007 from almost nothing a few years earlier, due to the fact that the fixed-line network was hit by sanctions after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 and barely survived the bombing during the 2003 war. Earlier this year, wireless local loop and WiMAX started to be rolled out. In June this year, WLL operator Kalimat deployed 3.5G services over its WLL network providing coverage in both urban and rural areas. In July this year, Itisaluna launched its fixed wireless network in Karbala and the southern provinces of Iraq.
