Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, Unimpressed by Apple TV Sales
Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, admitted in an earnings call earlier this week that the company’s digital video receiver device, Apple TV, has not been as successful as was hoped, and isn’t likely to become popular in the foreseeable future.
Jobs stopped short of calling Apple TV a failure, however, calling it more of an experiment.
“I think the whole category is still a hobby right now. I don’t think anybody has succeeded at it and actually the experimentation has slowed down,” Jobs said. “A lot of the early companies that were trying things have faded away, so I’d have to say that given the economic conditions, given the venture capital outlooks and stuff, I continue to believe it will be a hobby in 2009.”
In reality, of course, news of Apple TV has been largely overshadowed by a sea of excitement over the immensely successful iPhone, and concern regarding the current economic crisis and its potential impact on the tech industry.
Jobs conceded this week that he doesn’t know “how this economic downturn will effect Apple,” which suggests that the company might have more pressing concerns than the future of Apple TV.
