Aastra unveils IP telephony solution

Aastra 5000 range provides full IP, power, performance, security and openness.

Aastra today announced that it has launched the Aastra 5000, an open-standards-based IP telephony software targetting large enterprises with multi-site networks.

The IP Telephony market is presently enjoying two figure growth and is progressively replacing traditional solutions (TDM). The first phase of migration to Voice over IP (VoIP 1.0) saw the deployment of mainly proprietary solutions, without really affecting existing telephone architecture.

But from now on, with the increased reliability of IP networks and the accelerated development of new communication tools derived from the Internet, a second phase of migration (VoIP 2.0) has begun. This relies more on open standards and strengthens the interoperability of systems, terminals and applications.

It is in this market context that Aastra is launching the Aastra 5000 software, that can scale from 500 to 150,000 users (15,000 per server) and cover 2,000 sites. The telephony system also offers a robust platform for operators and integrators wishing to deliver managed communication services.

Supporting open-standards
Aastra 5000 is based on open standards enabling it to be integrated into the network easily. It forms part of Aastra’s long term product roadmap which aims to drive the use of open standards in business telephony.

Aastra 5000 includes:
- a SIP protocol ensuring it is compatible with all types of terminals: IP Aastra, SIP, SIP Video, H323, DECT over IP, SIP Wi-Fi or GSM/Wi-Fi, SIP or Aastra Softphones. Aastra’s popular 5300ip range (5360ip, 5370ip and 5380ip) is now also available with the Aastra 5000.
- a SIP Trunk interface for enterprises that can connect to Voice over IP operators and therefore provide communications savings
- an architecture based on Linux, which offers better reactivity when developing and integrating new software applications

Tough on security
The Aastra 5000 offers multiple levels of security. If necessary, the server can be protected via spatial duplication (on a second local or remote server), with automatic switchover in case of problems. This virtualization of the A5000 application can therefore support large enterprises’ business continuity plans. The software also includes an anti-virus capability and is compatible with various firewalls now available on the market. Furthermore, the Linux operating system is totally masked, thereby avoiding risk of attack

Simplified central administration
Administration of the system can be easily accessed via a simple Web browser enabling an administrator to manage the network remotely from any PC. System data (subscribers, network, software and hardware data) is stored in a central database that facilitates installation, configuration, operation and supervision of the network.

Aastra also offers the Aastra Management 7450, an administration software dedicated to managing very large systems, alongside the Aastra 5000. It enables administration of up to 2,000 sites in a centralised manner: telephony, security, directories, alerts, etc.

A wide range of applications
A wide range of applications is available to support the Aastra 5000 solution:
• ACP (Aastra Communication Portal): Contact Center, IP conference bridge, Web attendant, portal directory
• TWP – Web services: CTI, presence management, business applications (call recorder)
• UCP (Unified Communication Platform): unified messaging

Pierre-Alexandre Fuhrmann, Deputy Head of Product Strategy, Aastra, comments: “Aastra is already one of the industry leaders in Europe and Aastra 5000 will enrich and complete our portfolio of IP solutions, allowing us to become a major player in the large enterprise market.”
